12 (or so) WAYS TO MANAGE YOUR CAREER
While these look simple, simplicity is sometimes life's greatest challenge, along with perspective..
Trust yourself, your intuition, partner with your corporation. The new employment contract requires some direction and development on the organization's part; development, continuous learning and productivity on yours.
Follow these twelve steps systemically; empowerment is no longer a game. It is a counterbalance to entitlement which you and our society can no longer nor should afford
The below reflects a shift from the paradigm for continuous employment. It reflects the new world of controlling a continuous career for yourself.
- Establish positive work relationships with those around you. It's up to you to take the initiative
- Know your organization's goals and purposes, so that you can/must help to achieve them.
- Build a network with constructive successful people in your workplace (understand what success in your culture is first), and communicate with them frequently.
- Build your relationship with your boss on genuine mutual interests, abilities and goals. Actively listen.
- Test numbers 2,3,4 periodically with either a formal or informal 360 degree feedback system to check how you are doing.
- Establish a reputation for reliability by completing assignments well and on time. If comfortable, or even if not, take risks in creativity... "go where not invited" as long as it helps your organization, you, and you willingly accept consequences.
- Record and communicate your contributions and achievements; this can be very subtle and appropriate to your personality. They are the building blocks of your career. As important recognize the contributions of others. Business and successful ventures are won by teams, recognition and trust.
- Review metrics periodically to see if you are on course or if an adjustment is needed; this type of real time diagnostic review is important to see if external factors have changed.
- Your greatest strengths, interest, and competencies are your passport to career fulfillment. Practice them, build on them, and plan your career around them. Use some of your own resources to develop and take charge of your career
- Never present a problem without suggestion a constructive solution Act as if you are a "shareholder"... you are
- Continue to build and maintain your career contact network in a variety of industries, as applicable. Remember, your SKILLS are TRANSFERABLE
- Continue your personal and professional growth. Never be without a goal, or, a passion.
